Frequently Asked Questions

How long have you been doing what you do and how did you choose to be a Leadership / Executive Coach and Consultant?

To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment and resulting “compelling story” that brought me to where I am today, working with people like you on exactly what to do to let go of their feelings of overwhelm and enabling them to move on to grow their business on their own terms.

That defining moment in my life happened in late 2009. Flying back from a consulting engagement on the west coast, I realized I was ready to help my clients in a new way. As I looked back at all the work I’d done and talked to clients I’d worked with and even friends and business acquaintances it became clear that almost every consulting engagement involved my creating calm out of chaos. Projects have been in chaos or leaders are overwhelmed and my track records shows I have been able to quickly assess what was going on and propose the solutions that got things back on track.

During this process, I had an epiphany: The thing that I enjoyed MOST about my consulting was helping overwhelmed leaders regain their clarity of purpose, let go of ambiguity and uncertainty, and focus on their true goals and objectives.

Being a CEO is a lonely job; it helps enormously to have a sounding board; someone who’s there to toss around ideas with you; someone with no personal agenda to sway you in a certain direction; someone who will listen as you sort through all the ideas and concerns swirling around in your head; someone who can quickly help you make sense of the chaos so you can move forward with confidence.

I am committed to dedicating my professional life to helping CEOs and other leaders overcome the roadblocks of feeling overwhelmed and out of control by providing a safe, confidential space for them to share their challenges and obtain the support and guidance they need to move their professional lives and businesses forward.

Since I experienced this “epiphany,” I’ve supported CEOs and business leaders; shared my knowledge and experience in many group settings; and provided additional resources through my books, Put Your Big Girl Panties On and Kick Your Fears in the Ass  and Seen and Sustained: Best Practices in Communication for Small and Diverse Business,” a professional development workbook for creating and manifesting your vision and mission.

Who are your clients exactly?

I work with people just like you: CEOs, Executives, Partners and Principals who need someone to talk to, someone who understands business, who can see the big picture, can understand their vision, and – most important – can quickly help them see what needs to be done and guide and then through the steps.

What happens if you haven’t yet worked with people in my field?

I have worked with clients in a variety of industries. If I haven’t yet encountered your particular industry, you are not at any disadvantage. That sense of being overwhelmed isn’t specific to a particular industry. It’s a common thread among highly successful individuals who don’t have someone with whom they can share hopes, goals, and frustrations; someone who has nothing to gain by simply telling the boss what he/she wants to hear.

How are you different from “business coaches, mentors or consultants?”

As a Stakeholder Centered Coach I work with you the CEOs, Executives, Partners and Principals personally and with the business (or for Partners and Principals with their practice.) Although I do touch upon time management, goal setting, and other topics addressed by a typical “business coach” I also look at how your business is working for you. I work ONLY with CEOs, Executives, Partners and Principals.

A consultant typically focuses on the business while a Coach typically focuses on the individual. Due to my unique back ground we can work on the blocks that are keeping you from making the progress you want to make and from playing the bigger game you are feeling called / compelled to play. We can also look at your business and see what you can do to bring back the passion. While you set the agenda, I help you see those things that you can’t see because they are so often right in front of you.

What this means for you is that I am 100% focused on anything and everything that works for CEOs and business leaders. Because my client focus is very narrow, what you get from me is no-nonsense, undiluted expertise. I’ve become an expert at providing this very specific type of service. In addition, it’s natural for me to throw in a healthy dose of compassion, humor, and encouragement. That’s why my clients get great results.

What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?

I work best with CEOs, Executives, Partners and Principals who realize they need an independent listener, are ready to share what’s overwhelming them, willing to look and new ideas and be creative, and who, most of all, are honestly ready to take the steps necessary to move their professional career and their company forward.

I’m a high achieving go-getter myself, so I work best with other high achieving go-getters who are truly ready to let go of old ways of thinking and adapt to new methods that will lead them down a path of exciting and adventurous transformation.

What you and I will do is develop and implement an individualized action-learning course. It won’t be difficult, but you will be expected to take serious and consistent action. This will lead you to a very different way of thinking, and you’ll have my full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal: clarity, focus and a growing business.

For what type of professional is this program NOT going to work?

I’m very selective about who I work with, and I do cherry-pick my clients. This is for their benefit as well as mine. I gently turn away people who aren’t ready to do the work and take responsibility and won’t get the results for which they would have signed up. Many of these potential clients are at a point where they would best benefit from more traditional approaches; I’m happy to refer them to the resources I think are best suited for them at the time.

In addition, my services are generally not appropriate for someone whose business is financially desperate. It’s been my experience that people in financial crisis do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work; often they are spending much time and energy putting out financial fires: worrying about to fund payroll and meet operating expenses. If you fall within this category, it’s absolutely okay. We’ve all been in times of financial crisis at one point or another. But it’s usually not a good time to take on a new challenge. And working with me by its nature introduces some new challenges.

Does this really work?

Yes! Our collaboration provides you with true clarity. You’ll understand what is yours to do and how to stay focused on it. You’ll release what’s better done by someone else – and delegate it freely – or not done at all, in which case you’ll erase it from your priority list with no guilt.

What results can I expect?

You can expect to:

  • Feel calmer and more at peace with yourself.
  • Have increased clarity about your true objectives.
  • Freely entertain new options with a fresh point of view.
  • Exponentially grow your business.
  • Expand your pipeline to include more of the kind of business you want and need.
  • Freely delegate what is not yours to do.

Can I contact some of your former clients to see what it’s like to work with you?

Yes please feel free to email or call me for some names and ask them how they benefited from our collaboration.

How quickly can I expect results?

This depends on how long you’ve been in business and the amount of focus you put into the work you agree to do. But virtually all clients see results within the first two months, usually in the form of clearer direction leading to clearer focus, increased productivity, a new enthusiasm for yourself and your organization, and a wellspring of ideas and creativity leading to even more progress.

How can I guarantee myself that I will reduce my overwhelm and move my business forward

    1. Make our meetings a priority. Remember this time is for you. If you don’t take care of yourself you won’t be able to take your business where you want it to go.
    2. Be calm and patient. Understand that nothing is a quick fix. This process can feel very exciting and magical, but realistically it will take up to a year for you to sow all the seeds and for those seeds to produce the fruit you can enjoy.
    3. Be persistent. There will be new ideas to implement and tools for you to use. Continue to do the work when things are not going well and just as importantly when everything seems to be going fantastic.

Apply these three simple rules diligently and you’ll see the results for yourself, just as my other clients have.

Will I recover the investment of time and money I spend working with you?

Absolutely! Many clients are excited to report that they find they (and even their employees) are more productive because of the clarity and focus they now have. Reduced turnover in both employees and clients, whose loyalty you’ve won by demonstrating your stability, ability, and professionalism, will repay your investment many times over.

Jane, based on everything I’ve read and heard about you, I know you’re the one I want to work with. How do we get started?

Wonderful! I’m sure you know that one of the most prominent characteristics of successful people is that they take action, often based on “gut instinct.” If this truly feels like the right service for you and you’d like to take advantage of it, here are some next steps for you:

If I’m not sure I’m ready to get started, how can I sample your work at low cost to see if it’s the right solutions for me?

OK, I’m ready to do this for myself, but I have a couple of additional questions. Can I call you?
